AET Week 4 Peer Review

AET_week3_project_zps0f143755

Note: The above link is to a project by Joshua Banks.

This peer review is for Joshua Banks.

Joshua,
I examined your source material and your finished product
and I really like what you did with your ad. Your colors and text fit the ad
well. I also feel your piece is very well balanced. I like what you have done
with the text. Curving the text around the center picture is very effective.

I was just wondering, if you have considered making a series
of ads based on this concept, beyond what is being done for this class? I also
know that the ad implies drinking while driving because of the road and the
street, but do you think it would have been more effective to write something
about driving in the text or did you intentionally leave it out feeling that
the inference was more powerful?

I really feel the ad is successful in getting the point
across but I think it would be interesting to experiment with different
backgrounds for the ad. I am still not totally clear on what the middle part of
the ad is supposed to represent. Is it just for a sense of disorientation or is
it supposed to represent disaster? I feel that the way it is portrayed if
effective but perhaps a bit abstract. However, I am not sure what tone you are
going for. There might be other methods that would work well here ,as well.
Some other settings might work as well. Perhaps, like a highway or a more urban
type surrounding.

I really like your themes and would encourage you to
continue to make ads of this kind if you enjoy doing this type of project. I
feel the message is important and there are other creative ways that you can
portray this topic.  I do really like the
ideas behind the ad, and appreciate the time you took with this project. Thank
you for your time.

Sincerely,

Larry Antoskiewicz

Week 3 Analysis - Color Palette

The colors most prominent are blue, green and orange. I believe there a few cases of monochromatic color schemes with the greens in the picture. The greens on the top left are shaded differently than the greens on the right side of the poster. However, I would say that the main color scheme is split complementary because the greens and blues are cool colors and the orange is a warm color and they complement each other in the ad.

The orange in the middle of the ad creates the action in the scene. It draws the viewer towards the stairs and also makes the cooler blues and greens stand out much more. Also, the orange colors make the shadow more interesting and create a sense of adventure in the ad. The blues and greens give a much darker feel and create a sense of mystery in the ad. The mood is also heightened by the shadowy effect on the man in right corner, in contrast to his shadow. It is interesting that one shadow is done in orange and the other shadow is done behind the man using the color green. This also contrasts both halves of the ad.

I believe blue is used in the middle of the ad to create stability, because blue is considered to be a calming color. The blue on the staircase is used as a good middle ground between the other two prominent colors in the ad. Green is used because it is another calming color, but also creates a sense of safety to the viewer of the ad. The person in the corner seems to be hiding, but by using green it gives a sense of hope to the reader of the ad, that their ideas will be excellent and that they should come out and express them. Orange is a good color for the other side of the ad because the shadow is supposed to represent curiosity and even being excited about opportunity.

I feel this is a good color palette for the ad and cannot think of a better one, because the colors used in the ad are a good contrast to each other and work well in creating atmosphere. The ad does gain the readers attention.

AET Week 3 Exploration

I chose the poster from the movie Blade Runner because it is one of my favorite movies of all time. The poster has a lot of achromatic and neutral colors representing the dark tone of the film. I also noticed that there is almost a monochromatic color scheme that runs diagonally down the center of the poster, as well. This makes sense as it causes the viewer to focus on the main points of the poster and draws them into the world that the movie portrays.

AET Week 2 Analysis: Composition

The balance in this composition is created in one big way. It highlights the man in the lower right corner and contrasts that with the shadow on the upper left side of the ad. The staircase in the middle of the ad is used to showcase these two points of emphasis. Balance is also established by the use of two very different color schemes, which are blended by the middle portion of the ad. Also the diagonal nature of the staircase serves as an interesting divider for both sides of the ad.

The point of emphasis is on the man with the laptop. The other point of emphasis is the shadow on the wall. This is established by the positioning of both the man and the shadow. The staircase is used to separate them, so that whichever side of the ad you look at you notice one or the other. The text could also be an emphasis as it is a good size and is placed along the entire bottom of the advertisement. I also notice within the “everywhere”/”nowhere” words are two smaller highlighted words which are “here” and now”. This is a clever way to create different meanings in the same text.

The staircase creates a sense of movement in the ad. The staircase tells you to look up at the shadow and down at the man in the corner. This is natural because we the consumer use a staircase for both purposes. Also, the change in color scheme from light to darker in the middle to light again going in either direction emphasizes the staircase and its sense of movement. Also, when looking at the shadow first it can create a second sense of movement because when a consumer notices a shadow they sometimes look around to find the person the shadow belongs to. This causes the viewer to look to the rest of the ad for answers.

Portfolio Project: Certificate 1

I think that the most helpful skill I learned was actually PhotoShop basics because I have not used PhotoShop much and this told me how to really get started.

Week 1 Exploration: Professional Interests

My dream job would be to work as a film and television reviewer. I love to watch and analyze both film and television and love how there are similarities and differences between both mediums. The job appeals to me because it requires a variety of creativity that has always interested me. Since I was a child I always enjoyed watching television and going to the movies. A while after I graduated high school, my passion expanded to world cinema and a more serious appreciation for television production. The job requires not only watching a lot of things, but also keeping up to date on new projects that are being made. The job can also require a lot of research at times. I love doing research on entertainment history, so this fits in well with my goals as well. The jobs can vary from day to day, but in my situation I would like to record videos on sites like YouTube and also write a blog that corresponds with everything I review.

My inspiration in the field is Roger Ebert. I loved his writing style. I also agreed with his analysis most of the time, but even when I did not I just felt he was an entertaining and knowledgeable writer. He always seemed to truly love what he was doing and it really showed up in his writing style. Whether or not he liked a film the quality of work always seemed to be present. He was a true professional and someone who is still a big influence to me in my love of the profession. He was also one of critics that made the biggest impact on television with his partner Gene Siskel on the Siskel and Ebert At the Movies show.

Week 1 Analysis - Emotional Design

I watched the Chipotle game ad, and these were my thoughts. I think the emotion I most felt was wonder. The commercial was not what I expected from Chipotle. I expected a typical food commercial. I think that wonder was the emotion the creators were going for, because of the cartoon/fantasy style of the ad. I think the creators were also going for strong sentiment, which I feel they succeeded at.

This ad was effective in parts and not effective in other parts. I think that the beginning of the ad when the scarecrow enters the factory gets your attention right away. Then, the ad builds up and gets more serious in the middle. The other really effective part was when the scarecrow comes home and finds the pepper on the tree. This gives him a renewed sense of hope. The whole way the ad is shot makes it feel like a short movie. I personally did not think the music added much, as the singing was distracting. I feel just the instrumental track would have been better, but the lyrics do work with the ad.  Also, I am not sure about the end of the commercial. I know that the ad is for a game, but I feel some of that should have been incorporated earlier in the ad. It seems a bit gimmicky to show the whole story and have someone playing it on a computer screen at the end.  The twist is not as good as the story as a whole, and it makes the whole story seem like a bit of a let down, not focusing on really telling us why we should play the game.

I feel this ad would primarily fit in the Behavioral Design process. I feel this was because the movie like quality of the ad shows off innovation and tries to show the product as must have. The ad tells you that it can be easy and effective to create and enter this type of world if you play this game.  The ad also tries to make this game seem big and important. In that regard I feel the ad mostly works.

Overall, I like this ad, I just feel there are parts of it that do not focus on the main product, as intended.
